(9 months ago)About 20 years ago, when I was a college student, one of my classes was this World Civ lecture class. There were over 100 of us in this lecture hall, and on the first day the instructor passed out postcards and asked us to give him some info about ourselves. Most of it was the usual: name, phone number in case lecture was canceled, etc. He dug a little deeper, though, and asked us things like favorite film, music, and book. I filled mine out, passed it to the aisle, and it was collected up with the rest. The next time the class met, the instructor got on the microphone and said “If I call your name, I need to see you in my office after the lecture!” Mine was one of four or five that was called, and I thought “Great…what am I in trouble for already?” Apprehensively, I went to his office with the others who had been named and we talked amongst ourselves, trying to figure out why we had been singled out. We hadn’t figured it out by the time he got there. He called us in to his little office and shut the door. I think we were all waiting for Big Trouble of some sort, but instead we got: “Hey, I saw that you all listed Hunter S. Thompson as your favorite author. Mine too! I thought you might be interested in this article.” He then proceeded to hand us each a Xerox copy of the above article. I’ve kept it all these years, and actually use it as a bookmark in whatever HST volume I happen to be re-reading.
